E. Thomas Boyle is a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York. At the time of his appointment in 1995 he was in private law practice with the firm of
Boyle, Shea & Nornes, located in Hauppauge, New York.
Judge Boyle earned a B.S. degree from Holy Cross College in 1961 and an LL.B. degree form the University of Virginia Law School in 1964.
From 1965 to 1966 Judge Boyle served was an associate with Mendes & Mount in New York City.
From 1966 to 1971 he was an attorney with the Criminal Division of the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County, serving as trial counsel and later as chief assistant. From 1972 to 1975 he was appellate counsel in the Appeals Unit of the Federal Defender Services in Manhattan. He held counsel positions with the Minority Leader of the New York State Senate and Speaker of the New York State Assembly from 1977 to 1980, while also engaged in private practice. In private practice he principally handled civil and criminal litigation and municipal law. He successfully argued a United States Supreme Court appeal in 1984 that vacated the death sentence of a Mississippi inmate under the 8th Amendment. Between 1988 and 1992 Judge Boyle served as the County Attorney of Suffolk County.
