James Orenstein

James Orenstein is a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York. He is a graduate of the United Nations International School, Harvard University, and the New York University School of Law. Upon graduating law school, he served as a law clerk to United States Circuit Judge James Hunter, III.

Following his clerkship, Judge Orenstein worked in private practice from 1988 until 1990. From 1990 until 2001, he was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. During that period, he received several concurrent appointments, first as a Special Attorney to the United States Attorney General to serve as a member of the prosecution team in the Oklahoma City bombing trials from 1996 to 1998; then as an Attorney- Advisor in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel from 1998 to 1999; and finally as Associate Deputy Attorney General from 1999 to 2001. From 2001 until his appointment in 2004, Judge Orenstein was a partner in the New York City office of Baker & Hostetler.

Judge Orenstein is also an adjunct professor at the New York University School of Law. He teaches seminars on Complex Federal Investigations and Professional Responsibility in Criminal Practice.
