Michael L. Orenstein is a United State Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York At the time of his appointment in 1991 he was Chief Clerk of the Nassau County (NY) Supreme Court.

 Judge Orenstein earned his B.A. degree from Cornell University in 1961 and his J.D. degree from NYU Law School in 1965.  Between 1961 and 1962 he served in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant.

 Judge Orenstein was Law Assistant and Law Secretary to the Nassau County Court from 1966 to 1973. He then served as Principal Law Clerk to the Nassau County Supreme Court from 1974 to 1983, and Chief Clerk of the Nassau County Court from 1983 to 1985.  In 1985 he became Chief Clerk of the Nassau County Supreme Court and remained such until his Federal judicial appointment.
