Re:  ADR Internship Program
Fall 2007 Open

Dear Intern/Applicants:

For Fall 2007 semester three (3) interns will be appointed by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Department, Eastern District of New York. Interns will serve on a voluntary basis, without compensation. Applications for Fall 2007 will be accepted now.

This internship emphasizes not only research and writing, but also communication and organizational ability and problem solving.  Computer and web management skills are a plus. Applicants should be available for at least one day a week.

In this Court, cases ranging from complex commercial disputes to employment discrimination to civil rights violations and torts are being referred to arbitration and mediation.

Interns working in the ADR office will learn about alternative dispute resolution; what Court annexed programs exist; what the differences are among the various processes, and what to expect from the litigants, Counsel and the Neutral. Interns will view mediation and arbitration sessions.  Interns will become familiar with litigation pleadings and motions.

Interns will assist counsel and the litigants in organizing an ADR hearing and in following these cases to resolution. Interns will assist me in evaluating Mediation panel applications, collecting statistics on cases referred to ADR, and organizing training for the Neutrals. The ADR website will be updated; an ADR newsletter is contemplated.

Cover letters and resumes should be sent to my attention at the above address. My fax number is 718-613-2399. My email address is gerald_p._lepp@nyed.uscourts.gov

 Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Gerald P. Lepp
