He has been a court-appointed arbitrator for decades and has been a mediator, formally, since 2009. Mr. Newman served in 2000 -2001 as Vice President for Corporate Affairs for an Internet company that commercialized software developed at the Yale computer science department.
Mr. Newman has a private commercial and divorce mediation practice, and is in private law practice in Manhattan. His practice includes representing parties in arbitration and mediation. Court of Appeals: Mr. Newman serves as one of the initial ten private mediators used by the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in a pilot program (now extended) to use Court-appointed mediators in addition to the Court's in-house attorneys as CAMP neutrals. U.S. District Courts: Mr. Newman is on the Panel of Mediators of the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. At the SDNY, he is on the Mediator Advisory Committee. He mediates a range of cases, including Labor and Employment, FLSA, Section 1983 police misconduct cases, etc. State Court: Mr. Newman is on the Panel of Mediators of the New York State Supreme Court, New York County Commercial Division. He is an arbitrator for the NYC Civil Court. He is a community mediator for the New York Center for Interpersonal Development, the official Community Dispute Resolution Center on Staten Island.
